Yantras – Divine Symbols & Meditation Tool

Yantras – Divine Symbols & Meditation Tool

The word Yantra is a Sanskrit word which means ‘a machine’. Yantras are also called Mandalas which in Sanskrit means ‘a circle’. These are diagrams which are actually a schematic representation of Divine energy – Mantra or a Deity. Yantras can be based on a variety of geometric shapes using patterns that have evolved from different symbols. Everything in the Universe is in reality made up of energy in its most basic form and Yantras are dwellings of such Divine energies. These are also tools that facilitate meditation. Also, they have a central point or Bindu; Sadhaks when meditating focus their third-eye on this point to become one with the energy. These can be made using varied materials such as they are etched on metal like gold, silver or copper; they can also be drawn on various surfaces such as Bhojpatra, wooden bark or on the ground.

Yantras have been used since time immemorial to connect with the Divine and to worship Divinity. Drawing, understanding and then learning them was a part of ancient gurukuls’ curriculum. Lord Krishna and Balarama learned a lot about Yantra science in their adolescent years. Lord Krishna has also spoken about this equipment and their significance in Srimad Bhagwad Gita. Significance of Yantras is such that in ancient times entire temples were built according to models of Yantras. These are a tool for meditation, their geometry releases positive and beneficial energy which energizes the surrounding with auspiciousness. These also symbolize unity and harmony; they serve as a tool in one’s spiritual journey.

Lord Shiva once explained to Maa Parvati that Yantras are as essential to Gods as oil is to an oil lamp. They encompass within themselves the required shape or form energy (energy of a Deity or Mantra programmed into them). A mere sight of a Yantra is believed to be beneficial for a person. It is also an ideal tool to worship and revere a particular Deity. One can place it at the Puja altar or put it somewhere where one will see it every day and get blessed. As Yantras represent various Divine energies, Mantras and Deities they are also used to seek a particular blessing or benefit.

Yantras are used to connect with the Divine. By meditating on a Yantra one can gradually move from the outside to the centre (Bindu) of the Yantra. Once inside the centre, the practitioner connects with the central symbol or Deity and come closer to the goal of the understanding or enlightenment. These devices help transform oneself, aid purification and healing. Yantra meditation brings relaxation and allows one to achieve a still and clear mind. The repetitive and symmetrical patterns aid concentration and improve memory. Mere Divine sight of a Yantra reduces stress and induces positivity in a person. They allow one to let go and refocus in order to get in touch with the inner reality.
